2014 BrightSparks Scholarship And Education Survey Press Release

2014 BrightSparks Scholarship and Education Survey report

Aviation Industry Dominates Bonded Scholarship Rankings
MOHH and SgIS scholarships also see huge jump in popularity

(Singapore, 22 July 2014) – Local aviation-linked organisations Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Changi Airport Group (CAG) and Singapore Airlines (SIA) are among the most popular scholarship providers (with bonded scholarships) for Junior College (JC) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma graduates in Singapore, according to an annual survey by BrightSparks, Singapore’s most established and popular scholarship portal.

A total of 2,914 respondents participated in the BrightSparks Scholarship & Education Survey held from February to April this year. The survey targets potential scholarship recipients – ‘A’ Level and IB Diploma graduates, final year polytechnic students and Year 1 and 2 undergraduates attending local universities (NUS, NTU, SMU, SIT and SUTD).

JC and IB Diploma graduates who indicated an interest in applying for a CAAS, CAG and/or SIA scholarship (see below) listed ‘Career opportunities with the scholarship provider’ as their top factor (8.7/10, with 10 being the highest) when considering their scholarship options.

“The increasing range of scholarships from both the Government and private sector organisations in recent years has provided students with a plethora of scholarship opportunities. For aspiring scholars, the importance of which scholarship to apply for has never been greater.

“One sector that stands out is the aviation sector, which is very much a booming industry – consider the fact that Singapore has one of the busiest airports with a robust air cargo hub and also has a strategic location in relation to half of the global population in the Asia-Pacific region. The continuing expansion of Changi Airport (Terminals 4 and 5) and the rapid growth of the biennial Singapore Airshow, which showcases a wide range of aerospace interests, is also testament to the healthy growth of the aviation sector.

“In addition, career opportunities with aviation scholarship providers are also numerous and diverse. For example, upon graduation a CAAS scholar may find him or herself involved in an air traffic management role, while a CAG scholar might be helping to plan and develop further extensions to Changi Airport and an SIA scholar might be assisting in the acquisition of new aircraft for the airline.

“Aviation-linked scholarship providers may thus be seen by aspiring scholars as one of the fastest growing industries in the global arena,” explains Jessica Ang, Director, Marketing of the JobsCentral Group.

Significant Rise in Popularity of Healthcare and Singapore-Industry Scholarships

• MOH Holdings Pte Ltd (MOHH) – MOHH oversees the six different healthcare clusters in Singapore: Alexandra Health, Eastern Health Alliance, JurongHealth, National Healthcare Group, National University Health System and SingHealth

Following its progress in the 2013 BrightSparks Survey rankings, MOHH continues its rise through the ranks in this year’s survey. After their 40th placing in 2011 and 33rd placing in 2012, MOHH is now in the top 10 of the 2014 scholarship providers’ chart for the first time for all ‘A’ Level/IB Diploma graduates, ascending 17 positions from 26th in 2013 to 9th place this year.

• The Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS) was launched by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2012, in conjunction with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and other government agencies, to develop a strong core of Singaporeans to anchor strategic sectors in Singapore.

Aspiring SgIS scholars may indicate their preferred sponsoring private sector organisations when applying for the scholarship. These sponsoring organisations span a wide range of industry sectors and include (but are not limited to) the National Art Gallery, GE Aviation Singapore, Micron, PSA Corporation Ltd and M1 Limited.

After debuting at 18th in the 2013 BrightSparks Survey rankings, the SgIS secured a top 10 ranking this year for the first time, moving up eight places to 10th place among all ‘A’ Level/IB Diploma graduates.
